BREATHWORK EVIDENCE

What informs the breathwork.

Current breathwork, flow, and meditation research guides how State Training designs its breathing practices and connects them to attention, readiness, recovery, and action.

Each module connects a source to a specific design decision in the breathwork.

SOUND BOUNDARY

Each self-guided practice names its left, right, and binaural-beat frequencies. State Training treats those stereo tones as an optional pacing and attention layer—not proof that a specific frequency produces a particular state or outcome.

RESEARCH MODULES

What the research contributes.

Each claim stays inside the population, method, and outcome the source actually studied.

01

KNOW

Slow or coherent breathing

Open evidence module
What it means
Voluntary breathing at a slower pace can change the timing relationship between breathing and cardiovascular rhythms.
What the evidence supports
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found increases in vagally mediated heart-rate variability during slow breathing, immediately after a session, and after multi-session interventions.
Research boundary
HRV is not a score of personal worth or proof of calm, health, performance, or transfer. One protocol cannot validate all breathwork.
How State Training uses it
This research informs the selection and pacing of structured breathing practices. The pattern is adapted to the person and situation.

HeartMath has popularized branded coherence frameworks. Those frameworks do not independently validate State Training, and HeartMath does not endorse this breathwork.

02

KNOW · CAUTION

Breathwork interventions + self-reported mental health

Open evidence module
What it means
Breathwork research combines different breathing patterns, delivery formats, populations, and comparison conditions.
What the evidence supports
A 2023 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found a small-to-medium effect on self-reported stress across 12 studies with 785 adults. Secondary analyses also found effects for self-reported anxiety and depressive symptoms.
Research boundary
Most included studies had moderate risk of bias, methods varied, and the outcomes were self-reported. The review does not validate every breathing pattern, establish a universal effect, or test State Training.
How State Training uses it
This evidence supports modest, pattern-specific language and careful observation of response. State Training does not present the findings as proof of treatment or guaranteed transfer.
03

KNOW

Psychological flexibility

Open evidence module
What it means
A framework for present-moment contact, openness to experience, perspective, values, and committed action.
What the evidence supports
A 2024 systematic and meta-analytic review found that ACT interventions changed several flexibility and inflexibility processes, while effects varied by process and study quality.
Research boundary
Evidence for ACT does not prove State Training works, and State Training does not provide ACT or psychotherapy.
How State Training uses it
Psychological flexibility is a supporting educational lens for integration after breathwork. It is not a separate State Training modality.
04

KNOW

Flow readiness

Open evidence module
What it means
Flow describes deep absorption in an activity. Readiness means working with conditions associated with it, not forcing the experience.
What the evidence supports
A meta-analysis found challenge-skill balance moderately related to flow; clear goals and a sense of control were also meaningful antecedents.
Research boundary
Associations are not switches. Flow cannot be produced on demand, promised, or held continuously.
How State Training uses it
Breathwork may support preparation and attentional readiness before a real task while goals, skill, challenge, and feedback remain task-specific.
05

KNOW

Attention + perception

Open evidence module
What it means
Attention selects some information for further processing while other information receives less priority.
What the evidence supports
Research supports attention as both selective filtering and a limited processing resource, especially when several tasks compete.
Research boundary
Attention does not create objective reality, and noticing more does not guarantee the right decision.
How State Training uses it
Meditation science and attention research inform how participants notice experience and integrate the breathwork; meditation is not sold as a separate modality.
06

KNOW

Arousal + performance

Open evidence module
What it means
Activation can help, hinder, or have little effect depending on the person, task, timing, and interpretation.
What the evidence supports
A study of hockey players found somatic anxiety related differently to a cognitive task and perceptual-motor speed. The result argues against one universal target state.
Research boundary
There is no single optimal level that applies across people and situations. Calm is not always the goal.
How State Training uses it
The desired direction of state change informs whether the breathwork is intended to settle, gather, mobilize, or support recovery.
07

KNOW

Recovery + adaptation

Open evidence module
What it means
Recovery is part of participation: the changing process through which resources become available again after demand.
What the evidence supports
A sport-science consensus statement describes performance as dependent on an adequate, individually variable relationship between load and recovery.
Research boundary
Sport evidence does not define recovery for every person or prove that a specific State Training practice improves it.
How State Training uses it
Breathwork sessions treat recovery, feedback, and the next adjustment as part of the experience rather than a reward after effort.
08

KNOW · CAUTION

Youth + universal programs

Open evidence module
What it means
A program offered to every student can produce different effects across ages, settings, needs, and implementation conditions.
What the evidence supports
The large MYRIAD cluster randomized trial found no superiority of universal school mindfulness over normal provision for adolescent mental-health risk or well-being.
Research boundary
One mindfulness curriculum does not test State Training. It does show why universal benefit should not be assumed.
How State Training uses it
Youth work begins with listening, consent, opt-out, low intensity, host responsibility, measurement, and a limited pilot.

WHAT STATE TRAINING IS STUDYING

Transfer happens in real life.

State Training studies how a breathing practice carries into action outside the session: for whom, under which conditions, and across which kinds of demand. Real-life transfer is the standard.
